Colorado summers have a lot going for them – plenty of sunshine, mountain air, and long days outside. But inside the house is a different story.

You might keep your windows shut to fend off the heat or smoke from wildfires, but it can make the air indoors feel stuffy fast. Add in things like dust, dry air, and pollen, and it’s no surprise you might find yourself dealing with dry skin, irritated eyes, or just that heavy feeling in the air.
If you’ve lived in the Front Range for a while, you’ve probably noticed how quickly indoor air can go from fine to uncomfortable, especially when the weather gets unpredictable.
The good news? There are a few simple ways to stay ahead of it. At Great Guys Colorado, we’ve helped plenty of families across the Denver Metro area create cleaner, healthier air at home. Here are some tips that can make a real difference this summer.
Stay on Top of Filter Changes
One of the easiest ways to keep your indoor air clean is by checking your HVAC filter, as it plays a major role in catching dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.
With your A/C running more often and pollen coating everything, filters can clog up faster than you’d expect. If you live in the hills near wildfire-prone areas or on a windy street, that buildup can happen even quicker.
In summer, it’s a good idea to check the filter once a month. If it looks dusty or packed with debris, swap it out. A clean filter helps your system breathe easier and keeps you cooler during the heat waves.
Watch Out for Pollen Buildup
Pollen season can be intense here. If you’ve ever seen your car coated in yellow dust overnight, you know what we mean.
When you open windows for that mountain breeze, pollen and other outdoor allergens can drift inside and settle on surfaces, rugs, and upholstery. To help manage this:
- Wipe down windowsills and door frames weekly
- Vacuum with a HEPA filter
- Wash bedding and throw blankets regularly
- Take off shoes at the door
Small habits like these can cut down on the particles floating around inside your home.
Consider The Humidity Inside Your Home
In a lot of places, summers feel heavy with humidity, but Colorado tends to dry everything out, including the air inside our homes and offices. If you’ve ever woken up with a dry nose or itchy skin, the lack of moisture might be to blame. The drier it gets, the more dust gets kicked up.

Adding a little moisture back into your home can make things more comfortable. You can use a humidifier, either one for the whole house or a smaller one in the bedroom or living area, as a great way to add moisture back into your air. You can also try simple life hacks like setting a bowl of water near a sunny window or a heat vent. Even your houseplants can help by adding moisture to the air, especially Snake Plants.
You don’t want to overdo it, though. Somewhere between 30 and 40 percent humidity is usually just right, as it’s enough to ease the dryness without creating other problems like mold.
Be Mindful of What’s in the Air Indoors
A lot of people focus on outdoor air quality, but indoor sources can cause just as many issues. Think about everything that floats through the house in the summer—cleaning sprays, pet dander, smoke from the grill, dust from a new couch or fresh paint.

There are a few easy ways to cut down on those airborne irritants:
- Stick with gentle cleaning products when you can
- Run the kitchen or bathroom fan to help vent out steam and smells
- Crack a window early in the morning or later in the evening to bring in some fresh air
- Store strong-smelling products like paint or glue in the garage or a shed
If you’ve done recent remodeling or bought new furniture, it might help to run an air purifier with a carbon filter to catch some of the leftover chemical odors. Small, easy changes can make your rooms feel noticeably more comfortable.
Give Your Cooling System a Little Attention
When your A/C kicks on, it does more than cool the house. It moves air from room to room, so if something in the system is dirty, that air might carry dust and debris with it.
That’s why it’s a good idea to have your system checked once or twice a year. One of our techs can clean the coils, clear out dust in the vents, and make sure everything’s running smoothly. Over time, a clogged or neglected system can start to affect your air and your energy bill, so even if you’re not noticing something right now, it’s best to get regular checkups on your system.
Remember that a basic tune-up helps by keeping the system working efficiently, especially on those days when the temperature spikes and you’re relying on it to keep the house cool.
